Can't Rowan Atkinson's bumbling parody of James Bond just leave well enough alone?

Let's hope that this is the last strike for Johnny English.

Strings together gag after gag after gag at such a relentless clip that it's hard to do anything but double over laughing.

Those attuned to Atkinson's comic stylings - he can make chewing a stick of gum an absurd piece of physical comedy - will find plenty of chuckles in this lightweight threequel.

Every gag in this movie has already been done before, and better, presumably by one or both of the earlier Johnny English films.

The film doesn't offer many huge belly laughs - Atkinson has never been one for big comic climaxes - but it does deliver a fairly steady stream of pleasant chuckles, many of them mixed with generous doses of humiliation comedy.

There's nothing really new or fresh or bold in Johnny English Strikes Again, the third installment of Rowan Atkinson's bumbling-spy saga/James Bond spoof.

It occurs to me that Johnny English might be funnier if Atkinson played Johnny silently, the way he used to do mischievous Mr. Bean, the role that made him famous.

If you're determined to recycle one of his characters, wouldn't the beloved Mr. Bean or Blackadder make more sense than a James Bond parody made up for British credit card ads? At the very least, doesn't he, and don't his fans, deserve better material?

"Johnny English Strikes Again" has a few more laughs and far fewer cringes (and stereotypes) than the two films that preceded it.

With this latest installment in what has turned out to be a surprisingly consistent series, Johnny English's old-fashioned pratfalls make for an irreverent raspberry in the face of evil.

Perhaps a case could be made that something about this series is lost in translation, but it's all delivered in plain English. Johnny English.

The humour feels as if it is pitched at kids rather than adults, and for me Johnny English's wacky misadventures aren't as inventive and focused as Atkinson's silent-movie gags in the persona of Bean.

Delivers little besides labored jokes, a moronic plot and characters so thinly drawn they make Mister Bean look like the work of prime-time Ingmar Bergman.

More than even before, this series has a leftover-goods, what-is-this-movie-doing-here? quality.
